Proper home maintenance is critical as a homeowner.
Regular maintenance can keep your house in good working order, preserve its curb appeal and save you from unnecessary — and costly — repairs.
Do you have a detailed upkeep schedule for your home? If not (or it’s been a while since you performed any routine maintenance), it’s time to get to it.
Here are six tasks you should have on your to-do list for spring.
Inspect your roof (and make repairs if necessary). Scan the surface of your roof from the ground. If you spot any missing or damaged shingles, call a roofing professional. Checking your roof often is critical for catching leaks and other problems early.
Clean gutters and downspouts. Blocked gutters and downspouts can lead to water pooling on your roof, potentially causing leaks and other damage.
Check the sprinkler or irrigation system. Colder weather can be rough on sprinkler systems, so make sure your sprinkler system is running properly before you start gardening. This is particularly important if you’ve had a lot of freezing temperatures.
Get an HVAC checkup. As it starts to warm up, your HVAC system will get quite a bit of use. Make sure your unit is in good shape with a checkup from a pro. They can also ensure that it’s working efficiently and won’t increase your utility bills too much.
Examine your windows and screens. Good windows can keep out spring rains and summer bugs — and as the weather heats up, they can allow your air conditioning to work more efficiently, too. All windows should close snugly, and you should ensure that screens and weatherstripping are intact.
Check for excess moisture. Moisture anywhere in your house can lead to mold (and related health problems). If you suspect water damage may be present in your home, get it looked at by a professional as soon as possible.
